NA told upcoming energy conservation plan


ISLAMABAD: Ministry of Water and Power on Thursday unveiled in National Assembly (NA) energy conservation measures for upcoming six months to help lessen the impact of the country’s growing energy crises.

Under the energy conservation measures, usage of all lights at Government installations including the offices of President, the Prime Minister, Provincial Chief Ministers, Federal Cabinet, and other Public offices would be reduced by 50 percent.

Federal Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar in his detailed briefing to the National Assembly about the plans said that no unauthorized official, below BPS-20, can use air-conditioner. The authorized official too can use it after 11 am.

The ministry has recommended five working days, with two weekly offs, in all government and allied offices, he added.

Under the measures, he added, usage of all streetlights would also be reduced, Power supply to billboards, and commercial decorative lighting will be cut off. He however added that this measure would remain in Place for six months and will be reviewed, keeping in view the situation.

He said he has also recommended shutting down of markets by 8 PM. He said that the measures would save round about 1000 to 1100 megawatt electricity.

New digital electricity meters would be installed, he said, adding that, system to check power theft was in place and strict action would be taken against violators.

He said the Government would also seek other means of power generation and work on 5 big energy projects is also underway.

The minister said the government would ensure uninterrupted power supply to industrial sector so that there was no negative impact on the economic development. The industrialists would be asked to import digital machinery, which consumes cheap electricity, he said.
