No political party involved in Karachi target killings: Malik

* Interior minister says foreign forces should take effective action against terrorists sneaking into Pakistan from Afghanistan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The arrested target killers in Karachi are not part of any political party and the government will not spare any criminal in this regard, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday.

Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, he said the government was taking strict action against the criminals involved in target killings and extortion.

Replying to a question, he said due to the efforts of the security forces, not a single incident of target killing has been reported in Karachi since Thursday.

To another question, he said that it seemed that the target killers were trying to seek shelter of political parties.

He said all incidents were not target killings as some people had been killed as a result of personal enmities, however, some culprits had been arrested and others would be exposed soon. To a question, Malik said certain elements were acting against the interests of the country. He said that in the future prepaid SIMs would be delivered at the addresses, which are mentioned in the applicants’ national identity cards. Replying to another question, the minister said that the number of machines had been increased in the passport department to facilitate people and if any issue arises which cannot be resolved, then the passport printing process would be given to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

He said that India had handed over the report on the Samjhota Express to Pakistan, but it would be not shared with the media.

Also, Malik labelled terrorists as traitors and exhorted that they should not be called Talibans, which meant knowledge-seekers.

In a veiled reference to the allied forces in Afghanistan, he called upon them to take effective actions against the terrorists sneaking in to Pakistan from the neighbouring country.
