Zardari rules out early elections

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman, Asif Ali Zardari, during a meeting of the PPP core committee, said that more than half of the term of the government had been completed and the party needed to shift gears to be able to usher into election mode when the time for it came. However, he said that the elections will be held on time as laid down in the constitution.

Zardari presided over the meeting where he reviewed the present political situation in the country, relations with coalition partners and other issues of concern.

The meeting expressed satisfaction with the outcome thus far of the policy of reconciliation and decided to continue with it in the larger national interest.

While briefing the journalists, Babar said that the participants were also briefed by the president regarding his recent visit to Turkey with particular reference to the pre- feasibility of the proposed fast goods train between the two countries, named after the Turkish president as “Gul Train”.

The prime minister too briefed the audience regarding his visit to Afghanistan.

Zardari said that the performance of each PPP minister in the remaining period of the term will be keenly watched and scrutinised so as to decide issues like award of party tickets and party offices in the future. The meeting also decided to invite provincial party presidents to another meeting to be held soon to seek their advice and inputs on party and constituency matters. app
