Rehman Malik defends ISI, rejects criticism

Staff Report

KARACHI: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik held on Tuesday that attempts to defame the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) internationally have always failed. “The ISI is never been involved in politics. It has served the country and nation tremendously,” said Malik while briefing media at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat after twin blasts hit Karachi on Tuesday.

The minister asserted that the country’s premier intelligence agency was being wrongly defamed globally, saying that it was under direct control of the army. “The Interior Ministry controls police and some paramilitary units and the ISI is exclusively controlled by the Pakistan Army,” added Malik.

“The ISI is a patriotic organisation and has a great role in combating terrorism in the country. Those who are trying to malign the agency would never succeed in their designs,” the minister remarked. Malik told media that ‘good clues’ had been found in Tuesday’s attacks on the buses of the Pakistan Navy. “We have found good clues and hopefully will nab the culprits,” he said.

Malik also said that in the future, no one would be allowed on the crime scene “until forensic experts collect evidences and clear the site”.

Earlier, Malik co-chaired a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. The meeting discussed overall law and order situation in Sindh, particularly the business hub of Karachi.
