Babar Awan contempt hearing adjourned till April 10
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) resumed the hearing of contempt of court case against former law minister Senator Babar Awan today and adjourned the proceedings till April 10, Geo News reported.The SC had to indict Babar Awan today but due to the absence of Attorney General Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq, the apex court could not indict him, therefore, the hearing was adjourned till April 10.
Attorney General Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq is currently in Quetta as Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry is hearing Balochistan peace-related issues in Supreme Court Quetta Registry.
Advocate Ali Zafar told that the presence of Attorney General is a legal requirement for indictment.
The SC had taken the notice of former law minister’s press conference on Memogate scandal that ridiculed the apex court’s orders.
A three-member bench of apex court comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ijaz Afzal Khan and Justice Athar Saeed heard the case against Awan.
The apex court in its verdict had declared that the press conference of December 31 came under the contempt of court. The court will indict Awan and after that formal trial of the case would be initiated.
On the last hearing on March 20, Babar Awan prayed the court to adjourn the hearing as his counsel is engaged in Lahore.
The two-member bench adjourned the hearing of the case till the April 02 and decided to charge sheet Babar Awan on the same date.
