Pakistan values friendship with Egypt: GilaniISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday said the constitution of Pakistan explicitly declared that sovereignty belonged to God and the authority was to be exercised through the elected representatives of the people of Pakistan. Gilani was talking to Chief Justice of Egypt Justice Muhammad Hossam Elddin El Gheriany. He said the people of Pakistan greatly valued their deep-rooted and long-standing friendly relations with Egypt, adding that relations between the two countries were based on Islamic brotherhood and commonality of interests.
The Egyptian chief justice said that his meeting with the prime minister of Pakistan was the most important part of his visit, adding that he was pleased to observe that judiciary in Pakistan was functioning independently and the world knew that it was a free institution.
The prime minister said that Egypt was home to one of the richest ancient civilisations of the world. He said the Jamia Al Azhar had greatly benefited the scholars of Muslim countries as a centre of excellence in all disciplines, especially Islamic teachings and research. Gilani said that holding of successful parliamentary elections and framing of a new constitution in accordance with aspirations of the people of Pakistan reflected the political maturity of the country. The laws pertaining to qisas and diyat, freedom of information and evidence had been enacted as per directions of the Federal Shariat Court and the Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the prime minister stated. He asked the visiting chief justice to convey his best wishes to the prime minister of Egypt. The Egyptian chief justice apprised the prime minister that the new constitution of his country would ensure independence of judiciary, as it would be framed by the elected representatives of the people. He said that he would meet the chief justices of high courts of Pakistan to hold discussions about the judicial system of the country, expressing hope that the comparative study would enable him to make useful recommendations back home.
