Sindh to experience severe hot weather this summer
KARACHI: There are no signs yet of early or heavy monsoon rains in Sindh, however, the province would experience intense hot weather this summer like last year when the mercury touched 53 degrees centigrade at Larkana and some other parts breaking all the records, Chief Meteorologist Tauseef Alam said.
“There is upward trend and even during early days of summer the mercury has reached 43 degrees centigrade in Mithi, Jacobabad and some other parts of Sindh. The rise in temperature would continue and it might touch the same level of last year,” he told.
“As regards monsoon rains, the situation would become clear in May or early June,” he added saying usually the monsoon rains start in the first week of July every year in Northern parts of country and by end of July in South. “However it depends on the situation developing over India due to which generally it is called Indian monsoon.
To a query about some experts of Karachi University and certain NGOs, who during their recent visit to Badin district’s areas devastated in last year’s rains, had apprehended heavy monsoon rains and floods again this year, Tauseef Alam said their apprehensions could be based on speculations. “The Meteorological Department has most modern equipment, weather radars and satellite links and it constantly collects the reports on situation developing in the region. We make predictions in view of all these reports.
When inquired about Met. Office’s inability to record the rainfall in Sanghar district last year when the torrential rains deluged it, Chief Meteorologist said his department has equipment installed at Nagarparkar and certain other places.
To another question, he said a Japanese team of engineers visited Pakistan and upgraded the weather radars however the Display Cards are yet to be installed, for which the funds are yet to be released by the government. “I hope it would be done in 15 days. (PPI)
