SC issues contempt of court notice to Punjab AIG
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a contempt of court notice to Punjab Police Additional Inspector General (AIG) Aslam Tareen for apprehending nine persons of a pharmaceutical company by defying the court orders. The court also directed the Punjab government to submit the investigation report in the matter of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology’s (PIC) spurious medicine scam within three days. A two-member bench, comprising Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing a case where Dr Khalid Ranjha, counsel for a pharmaceutical company, apprised the bench that the Punjab Police arrested nine people who had come from Karachi for cooperating in the investigation. Dr Ranjha further stated that the Supreme Court on January 30 had directed the police not to make arrests. However, he said disobeying the court orders, Shadman Police Station, Lahore, arrested nine people who were assisting the police in probing the matter of spurious drugs at the PIC. “I was well aware of the apex court’s orders in the case but at the same time I was compelled to arrest all these persons under the command of AIG Aslam Tareen who ordered me to apprehend them,” the station house officer (SHO) concerned told the bench. Taking serious notice of the matter, the court asked the SHO to produce all the arrested people before the magistrate in Lahore on Tuesday (today) and issued contempt of court notice to the Punjab additional IG to appear before the court on April 11. staff report
