Major parties stay away from PCNS meeting

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) on Monday ended without any decision because members of major political parties, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the PML-Quaid (PML-Q) remained absent.

However, PCNS Chairman Raza Rabbani hoped for a positive development on Tuesday (today).

The JUI-F continued its boycott while the PML-N members did not attend the meeting due to the energy conference in Lahore.

Speaking to reporters, Rabbani called the JUI-F’s boycott “unfortunate” and said he had asked JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman to attend the meetings, but the cleric refused. Rabbani said that if the JUI-F had any reservations, it should present an opposing note in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the JUI-F held a meeting at Fazl’s residence where the party decided to continue boycotting all parliamentary committees, including the PCNS. Fazl warned that they would resist any move to approve the domestic violence bill. He said that the bill was an effort to promote westernisation in Pakistan. He also said the JUI-F would take other religious parties onboard and protest across the country if the government tried to approve the bill.
