Power tariff decreased for lifeline consumers

By Zeeshan Javaid

ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday announced a minor decrease (Rs 2.67 per unit) in power tariff for domestic consumers.

The government has extended the lifeline electricity consumers quota from 50 units per month to 100 units from May 2012.

According to a notification issued by the Water and Power Ministry, the government had reduced electricity rates by Rs 2.67 per unit for domestic consumers. However, it would not be implemented on commercial and bulk consumers.

Sources in the ministry said that the government had changed the definition of lifeline power consumers and, after the new definition; the lifeline consumers would be given a relief of Rs 2.67 per unit.

Before this decision, Rs 1.87 per unit were being charged from consumers who were using 50 units and consumers using 100 units were charged Rs 4.75 per unit.

The ministry claimed that the decision had been taken in accordance with the decisions taken at the Energy Conference held in Lahore.

Sources said the new tariff would be in effect from May.
