Aitzaz to represent federation in ZAB case
ISLAMABAD: PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan has replaced Babar Awan to represent the federation in the presidential reference to reopen Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZAB) case, filed with the Supreme Court. The decision has been taken in principle keeping in view the fact that Babar Awan’s licence has been suspended. This will be the second high-profile case for Aitzaz Ahsan, who is already representing Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in a contempt of court case in the Supreme Court. Office-bearers of People’s Lawyer Forum (PLF) have welcomed the decision by President Asif Ali Zardari to appoint Aitzaz Ahsan as federation’s lead lawyer in the ZAB case. In a statement, PLF office-bearers hoped that being a veteran PPP leader and a close aide to former PPP chairman Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Aitzaz would better present facts in the Supreme Court. A Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, is hearing the ZAB reference case. Earlier, former law minister and PPP leader Babar Awan had been pursuing the case in the Supreme Court, but the court later suspended his licence. Aitzaz Ahsan has already made legal history by having defended two prime ministers in the court of law. Aitzaz Ahsan was elected to the National Assembly for the terms of 1988, 1991 and 1993. He was also elected as senator for the term of 1994-1999. app
