SC hears election expense case

ISLAMABAD: During proceedings of the election expense case in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that the Election Commission was becoming disabled and even a post office could perform its duties.

Chief Justice Chaudhry inquired as to how political parties operated without donations. The lawyer for MQM, Farogh Naseem informed the court that apart from the MQM, other parties take millions for party tickets.

The representative for the Election Commission informed the apex court that the country’s major political parties accumulate large amounts in donations but this is not mentioned anywhere.

Chief Justice Chaudhry remarked that was it not malicious to accumulate such large amounts of money in the name of donations and questioned why the Election Commission was not investigating the accounts of political parties.
