No change in Siachen policy: Foreign Office

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday said Siachen glacier was part of dialogue process with India and Pakistan gave several proposals including mutual deployment of troops for resolving this issue.

Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Ali Khan told a press briefing here that Pakistan has made no change in its stance on Siachen glacier (where troops of both countries are deployed at the highest battle ground in the world since 1984 when India sent it’s Army).

Asked about the demilitarization of Siachen glacier after 144 Pakistani soldiers and 11 civilians are trapped under a avalanche since April 7, 2012, spokesman said "it is in our mutual interest that we address all the issues in a meaningful and result oriented manner."

He referred to April 8, 2012 meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Sindh in New Delhi‚ and said two leaders in their interaction underlined importance of a pragmatic and practical solution of all the outstanding issues. He said both countries would have to find some way to move forward.

He said the next Pakistan-India Defense Secretary level talks will be held in Pakistan and both sides are working to finalize the date for this meeting.
