Investigation may take up to one year: DG CAA

ISLAMABAD: The Director General of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Nadeem Yousafzai responded to allegations that there was political pressure behind issuing the license to Bhoja Airlines.

“They (Bhoja Airlines) had a license since 1994 but were closed due to non-payment of dues to CAA. The airline had a joint venture after which their dues were paid. The planes were inspected by the CAA.” Yousafzai told reporters at a news conference.

"The CAA does not make any compromises on safety,” he added.

When asked about the investigation, Yousafzai said it could take anywhere from three months to one year, but the positive side was that unlike the Air Blur crash, the wreckage in this crash was within a four kilometer radius.

Yousufzai added that the black box could take a month to decode.

DG CAA said that contact with the aircraft was cut off at 18:40 approximately six kilometers away from the international airport in Islamabad.

“The pilot got clearance for landing, after which communication was cut off.”

According to the DG CAA, 122 passengers and five crew members were on board the plane. 115 victims had been identified and 113 had been handed over to their families.

The DG CAA clarified that the weather warnings issued by the MET Department were not so severe that the air field would be closed.
