CEC reviews by-elections’ arrangements
ISLAMABAD/DERA GHAZI KHAN: Acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan visited Dera Ghazi Khan to review the arrangements for by-elections in different constituencies of the division. He visited polling stations in two constituencies and held meetings with the candidates to hear their concerns about the arrangements for the elections. The acting chief election commissioner assured the candidates that their concerns would be addressed in accordance with the law. He also presided over a high-level meeting with the district administration at the commissioner’s office. Officers from other departments concerned, including the regional police officer, were also present in the meeting. The district returning officer, district coordination officer and district police officer gave detailed presentations regarding arrangements for by-elections, including a contingency plan for deployment of security personnel at polling stations and general maintenance of law and order in polling constituencies. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative also gave a presentation about a programme to train polling staff. The DG Khan commissioner and regional police officer said that all efforts would be made to ensure the successful conduct of by-elections. The acting chief election commissioner directed all concerned to make foolproof arrangements to ensure smooth, peaceful and transparent by-elections to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. Later, addressing a press conference, he said new electoral rolls would be completed within the next month, adding that the lists were being prepared according to Computerised National Identity Cards. staff report/agencies
