Zardari orders action against Lyari criminals
* President asks PPP workers not to be provoked into taking law in their own hands
KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari emphasised on Tuesday that law and order in Lyari will be maintained at all costs without fear or favour, with the help of law enforcement agencies, and also asked party workers not to be provoked into taking the law in their own hands.
The president said this during a special meeting he chaired on Lyari’s law and order situation, held at Bilawal House, and attended by PPP legislators and office-bearers from Lyari. The president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar quoted him as saying that the situation in Lyari had to be tackled both by use of force against criminal elements and pressing into service political means by addressing the genuine problems of development in the area. He said maintaining law and order was a shared responsibility of the political forces, and all political forces needed to join hands to maintain law and order in the city.
During the meeting, the participants gave their perspectives on the reasons behind the situation in Lyari, and also offered suggestions on how to tackle the situation. Farhatullah Babar said the president told the Sindh CM that Rangers and FC should be directed to assist police in the maintenance of law and order in Lyari.
Zardari said criminal elements had no link with the Pakistan People’s Party. He also ordered to eliminate all gambling dens and crime zones with immediate effect. The president also ordered to install more checkposts in Lyari and eliminate crime from the area before the general elections.
Later, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah briefed the meeting on the progress of various development projects in Lyari. The meeting reviewed progress on Lyari Development Package, which included laying and relaying of water and sewerage pipe lines and system, development of roads, educational institutions, parks, playgrounds and provision of electricity in all 11 union councils of Lyari. staff report/agencies
