Gilani to honour Pak-Iran agreements

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday said the government’s top priority was to implement all agreements concluded between Pakistan and Iran, including gas pipeline and import of electricity.
The premier was talking to Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Alireza Haghinghian. The latter met Gilani at the PM’s House. Gilani said that he would direct State Minister for Foreign Affairs Malik Amad Khan to follow the implementation of agreements concluded between the two countries.
He said Iran and Pakistan had excellent multi-dimensional cooperation in the fields of trade, infrastructure, energy and culture. The premier underscored the importance of people-to-people contact and visits of parliamentarians to further strengthen the relations on durable basis between the two countries.
Gilani extended his deep sense of gratitude to the people of Iran and the Iranian government for extending generous assistance to the flood victims.
Gilani asked the ambassador to extend his best wishes to the Iranian president, the senior vice president, the interior minister and the governors of Mashhad and Gilan.
The premier expressed his confidence that the new ambassador to Pakistan would put in his best efforts to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
The envoy said Pakistan-Iran relations were moving in the right direction. He apprised the PM that negotiations regarding the purchase of wheat and rice from Pakistan had completed. The ambassador also said that two Pakistani delegations, representing water and power and oil and gas, were visiting Iran.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of collaboration in the banking sector, which would help realise the full potential of trade between the two countries.
The ambassador conveyed the condolences of the Iranian people and the leadership over last week’s plane crash near Islamabad.
Separately, Senate Deputy Chairman Sabir Ali Baloch called on the premier at the PM’s House and thanked the PM and the PPP leadership for reposing confidence in him. He assured the PM that it would be his utmost endeavour to facilitate the House business according to the best parliamentary practices.
