Gilani convicted: No reason for PM to resign, Cabinet decides
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet has decided to wait for the detailed verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) in Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani contempt case, Geo News reported.It was decided that the case was of political nature and there was no justification for PM Gilani to resign on moral grounds.
Federal Law Minister Farooq Naek and Attorney General Irfan Qadir briefed the cabinet.
Gilani, who was found guilty in a contempt of court case, chaired the emergency meeting of the Federal Cabinet to review implications of the court's verdict.
Prime Minister Gilani who was greeted at the Cabinet meeting, by thumping of desks, by his colleagues, thanked them for their overwhelming support.
The prime minister said the Pakistan People's Party has always stood by the Constitution and would continue to do so. 'Pakistan's future would have been different, had the law of necessity not prevailed in the case of Molvi Tameezuddin.'
He told the cabinet members that he has never insulted the courts.
The meeting was attended on special invitation, by chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu Kashmir, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Governor Punjab.
The Cabinet reposed full confidence in the leadership of the prime minister.
Prime Minister Gilani said Speaker National Assembly has the authority to decide about the fate of public representatives.
