Just leave or face the music
LAHORE: PML-N President Nawaz Sharif on Saturday asked Yousaf Raza Gilani to immediately step down as prime minister after his conviction in a contempt of court case “otherwise he will face unexpected results”.
Addressing a press conference, Nawaz Sharif said the office of prime minister was vacant since Thursday’s judgement of the Supreme Court.
The PML-N chief held President Asif Ali Zardari responsible for the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
Earlier, Nawaz Sharif headed a party meeting to discuss the political situation following conviction of the prime minister.
He said Prime Minister Gilani had violated his oath by remaining loyal to President Zardari instead of the constitution.
Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N’s Central Working Committee would further elaborate on the issue in Islamabad on Monday.
“Pakistan is being run without a prime minister since Thursday morning,” he said and added that all the decisions and acts of the prime minister and federal cabinet were illegal and unconstitutional.
The former prime minister said that his party had many options to get its demands fulfilled, adding that the PML-N would protest in and outside parliament.
Nawaz Sharif said that a new prime minister – either from the PPP or any other party – should write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases the president.
He said that he had no personal enmity with Zardari and Gilani and “I am only following principles”.
Speaking on the occasion, opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that Gilani managed to “sneak into parliament to deliver a speech seeing that the PML-N is not present there”. He added he and his party members would not let Gilani come there [the National Assembly].
Meanwhile, the INP news agency reported that the PML-N has decided to approach all opposition parties in parliament as well as government allies to dislodge Gilani and install a consensus chief executive.
It added the party had decided to instruct members of parliament and organisations up to district and tehsil level to organise protests to put pressure on the government for the removal of the prime minister.
On Thursday, Nawaz Sharif had said Gilani should step down after being convicted by the Supreme Court.
Talking to a TV channel, he had said that the premier should resign from his office and pave the way for a new PM. staff report
