PPP mulls bringing resolution in NA to endorse presidential immunity
By Kashif Hussain
LAHORE: To avoid confrontation with the Supreme Court over the president’s immunity in the future, experts suggested to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) that it should bring a resolution of endorsement regarding the president’s immunity under the constitution and the Vienna Convention, Daily Times learnt on Friday.
Sources in the PPP said that the party heads were holding meetings with seasoned parliamentary affair experts and parliamentarians in this regard. Sources said that some experts had suggested the top leadership of the PPP that it should move a resolution in favour of the president and the PM in parliament. They also said that the party heads had not taken a decision in this regard. But a good number of PPP lawmakers wanted to use this option. Sources said the party had not discussed the issue with its allied parties like the Awami National Party (ANP), the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q). They said all allies would be taken into confidence within next two days in this regard.
About the benefits of the resolution, PPP sources said that Supreme Court had made it clear to the government at several times during the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) case and PM Gilani’s contempt of court case that the government should seek President Zardari’s immunity from the court while it was clearly mentioned in the constitution.
But, the PPP had decided in principle that it would not go in the court with the demand of immunity when parliament was supreme body of country and the constitution was clear on the issue. The sources added that after the resolution, it was being thought that that the emphases of the court about bringing the immunity matter from the government before it would be ended as the supreme institution had been endorsed the constitutional immunity.
