PM can’t be labelled as convicted until appeal: PML-Q

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Saturday said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani could not be labelled as a convicted person until a decision on his appeal. He was talking to the media at the Lahore Museum. He said the Supreme Court’s verdict did not disqualify the prime minister. Shujaat Hussain said that the prime minister had every right to an appeal and Nawaz Sharif’s acceptance or rejection of this fact would not make any difference. On the subject of the general elections, he said the polls would take place on time and once the government completed its mandated term. He said the PML-N leadership was interpreting the Supreme Court (SC) verdict in its own manner as the country’s apex court in its verdict has not written anywhere that Yousaf Raza Gilani was no more the PM. He said an appeal against the verdict was being filed, “final decision on which the question of Yousaf Raza Gilani remaining the PM or not, will arise”. He said that contempt of court should be imposed on Nawaz Sharif when he had stormed the SC and humiliated it. He said that people still remembered the attack on the SC when the nameplates of the judges were also removed and from the Punjab House. Replying to a question, Shujaat said that the SC had not charged Yousaf Raza Gilani with corruption or embezzlement of money, adding that Nawaz Sharif should not use the judiciary’s name for political purposes. He said that Nawaz Sharif was habitual of confrontation between the constitution and the institutions and wanted to exploit the opportunity for his political gains. staff report
