PML-N mulling over ‘grand alliance’ against PPP govt

By Moazam Baig

LAHORE: Blame game between the PPP and PML-N continues but the latter has decided to do something practical in this regard.

According to sources, the PML-N has started contacting other political parties to form a ‘grand alliance’ against the PPP government, especially PM Gilani. The PML-N has made the Supreme Court’s decision its baseline and has strengthened its efforts for an alliance “to disrupt the federal government”. The sources said Nawaz Sharif lost his patience over the issue of early elections and wants to derail the government in the Centre.

The sources said the movement started by Nawaz may prove fatal for the current rulers, adding that some lawmakers from other parties had responded positively in this regard, but insist on keeping it a secret until something concrete comes out.

The sources said the PML-N is again going to highlight the various failures of the central government and its policies that have pushed Pakistan to immeasurable depths of miseries – long hours of load shedding, debacle of Pakistan Railways, Steel Mills and PIA.

They said the PML-N leadership decided in its Central Working Committee meeting that a change in the political system would pave the way for their victory in the next general elections. A
According to the sources, the PPP has made various attempts to reorganise itself in Punjab. Some time ago, a membership drive was launched, which could never quite pick up, and was abandoned. Then a couple of meetings addressed by some PPP politicians were arranged, along with more visible rallies addressed by the prime minister in a few areas, but Punjab remained a stronghold of the PML-N. The sources say the PML-N is now going to focus on a one-point slogan: the PPP betrayed the people who voted for them. The Sharif brothers think that by highlighting corruption of the PPP rulers they can benefit from the ensuing disbelief and hate of the people for their corrupt politicians, they said.
