PML-N asks ECP to reject Musharraf’s nomination papers
* Party leader says conspiracies to bring back Zardari govt by dividing PML-N vote will be defeated by the people

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has demanded rejection of nomination papers of former military ruler Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf for the general elections.
Musharraf, who toppled the government of PML-N on October 12, 1999, returned to the country on March 24 after spending four years abroad. The PML-N has kept mum since Musharraf’s return to the country contrary to its earlier demand of his trial on various charges. The party has been accused of acting as a silent spectator because of alleged understanding with a foreign country that it would not raise the issue of Musharraf’s return to Pakistan.
Since his return, the PML-N has been criticised severely by various quarters for taking a U-turn on its previous stance of brining him to justice as soon as he lands in the country. On Wednesday, PML-N Deputy Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to reject the nomination papers of General Musharraf. “It is very heartening to see that the Supreme Court and election commission are taking stern action against fake degree holders, but the irony is that the dictator who faked constitution is freely roaming in the country,” he remarked.
He added that if no action is taken against him then it would be akin to taking punitive action against corruption of lower functionaries and turning a blind eye to corruption of big shots, saying the biggest forgery is tampering with the constitution. Ahsan said that the Supreme Court has already given historic verdict on the November 3, 2007 emergency imposed by Musharraf and declared it an extra-constitutional act.
“The PPP government did not proceed against Musharraf due to the NRO arrangement. Now the nation expects that the judiciary will take suo motu action against the dictator who played havoc with constitution, judiciary, media, and parliament,” Ahsan stated. “The conspiracies to bring back Zardari government by dividing PML-N vote will be defeated by the people of Pakistan.”
He asserted that the PML-N’s programme for a strong economy has been declared as the best economic programme and the party’s economic team is the most competent and credible. “The people must give a clear majority to the PML-N so that economic reforms can be implemented,” he added.
