PIA needs full time chairman: SC tells AG

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was informed on Wednesday that the appointment of chairman Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was according to law and competent authority gave the approval for the appointment. This was stated by Attorney General of Pakistan, Irfan Qadir, to a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, during the hearing of corruption and irregularities in the national flag carrier case. Attorney General said the appointment was made by the federal government as per the PIA (C) Act 1956. The AG apprised the court that the word ‘ex-offico’ in the notification for the appointment of chairman PIA was used mistakenly and a summary had been moved to the Prime Minister for correction. To this, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed inquired how a person could be the head of two institutions. Counsel for Chairman PIA, Raja Bashir responded that the secretary defence was holding the charge of chairman PIA as a part-time position. The Chief Justice questioned the need to appoint a part-time chairman. The Counsel replied that during the tenure of this part-time chairman, the financial condition of PIA had improved and the share of PIA had surged from Rs 2 to Rs 8. The CJ remarked that if the chairman was so useful for the PIA then he should be kept as the chairman on permanent basis and not part-time. app
