HHRD springs into action to help quake victims

ISLAMABAD: After learning that at least 40 people have been killed and over 180 injured in border towns and villages of Pakistan following the recent earthquake, the Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) immediately rushed its emergency team along with volunteers to the earthquake-hit area of Mashkail to assess the extent of damages caused by this natural calamity.
Reports indicate that hundreds of houses collapsed, rendering thousands of people homeless in the town of Mashkail and nearby villages in Washuk district, Balochistan following 7.9-magnitude earthquake in southeast Iran with a depth of 76 kilometres.
The HHRD rescue team is of the view that the affected area consists of three tehsils, nine union councils and 164 hamlets. About 100,000 people live off that area spread over 33,093 square kilometres. The population density is four persons per square kilometre, while the household size is 5.4. About 80 percent of the people of the area live in one-room houses. The entire area is rural in essence. Disability rate is very high in the region, which is 8.67 percent. Relief items including tents, basic foodstuff and cooked food, drinking water and medicine are urgently needed for the affected people, the organisation said in a statement.
The HHRD has also sent an emergency response team from Islamabad for immediate relief to the distressed people. At the moment, the HHRD has dispatched tents, basic foodstuff and cooked food, clean drinking water, medical supplies, shelter and other relief items worth $50,000 to the affected areas in Balochistan. pr
