Holding free, fair elections govt’s top priority: Nizami

LAHORE: Interim Information Minister Arif Nizami has said that holding of free and fair elections is the top priority of the caretaker government.

Addressing a function as a chief guest to mark the death anniversary of the poet of the east, he said that Pakistan had been founded on the basis of democracy and it would continue to strengthen the country.

The minister said all measures would be taken to transform Pakistan into a democratic and welfare state in line with the vision of Allama Iqbal.

He said that he was a part of a caretaker setup which was responsible to hold free and fair elections in the country. He said that transformation of Pakistan into a democratic and welfare state was their real destination.

He said that they were carefully heading towards the election which would be held on May 11.

He described the establishment of an independent judiciary and an independent media as an achievement of Pakistan.

Justice (R) Nasira Javaid Iqbal, Prof Dr. Muhammad Saleem, Orya Maqbool Jan and Iranian consul general Muhammad Hussain Bani Asadi also spoke on the occasion.
