No option except elections: Chief Election Commissioner

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Fakhruddin G Ebrahim said Thursday there was no other option but to hold elections.

Briefing the media following a meeting at the Election Commission to finalise the security plan, Election Commission Secretary, Ishtiaque Ahmed said the Defence Secretary had assured them of the army’s support.

Ahmed added that security would be provided to the leadership of political parties, candidates and election staff. According to the Election Commission Secretary, elections would be held in FATA where the army’s role here would be key. Ahmed further said polling stations would be created for IDPs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Ahmed said innocent lives were being lost in Balochistan because of some elements and the provincial government was using all pillars of the state against these elements.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from the provincial governments, Defence Ministry, Interior Ministry, FC and Rangers.
