Some countries agree to allow polling: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday confirmed that concurrence of seven host governments has been received for the conduct of election for overseas Pakistanis. While responding to a question at the weekly news briefing Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary said the election commission had shortlisted nine countries where polling could be held. The spokesman said concurrence from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Australia, Canada and United Kingdom has been received while a response from the United States and the United Arab Emirates is awaited. He said the matter of voting for overseas Pakistanis is under consideration in the Supreme Court and once a consensus decision is taken, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and missions abroad would extend all possible facilities for the conduct of polling. To another question, he said the Pakistan embassy in Baghdad has been issued instructions to extend due assistance to any Pakistani zaireen (pilgrims) stranded on the Iraqi border due to elections in that country. He said zaireen should check with the Iraqi embassy in Islamabad before leaving for Iraq. Replying to another question, the spokesman said there are no terror camps in Pakistan. About arrest of four British Muslims for plotting terror attacks and allegations that they received training in Pakistan, he said terrorists are being tried in different countries and they make different statements. app
