CHITRAL: Ending an 11-month period of severe tension and relentless waiting, the provincial constituency of PK-90 went to by-election on Sunday, resulting in victory of Sardar Hussain, a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate, by 98 votes, according to an informal and un-official result.
During the May 2013 elections, Ghulam Muhammad of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had won the seat, but the PPP candidate filed an objection with the election tribunal, after which polling in seven stations was re-held.
Hussain received 246 votes from Mastuj polling station, followed by 231, 256, 73, 160, 503, and 309 votes from the other stations. Ghulam Muhammad managed to secure 127 votes from Mastuj polling station, followed by 352, 160, 196, 80, 293, and 318 from the other stations.
PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari meanwhile congratulated Sardar Hussain on winning the election. He said the success of the PPP candidate in the election showed confidence of the people in his party. The PPP candidate’s victory was a rejection of the policy of appeasement of the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and an endorsement by the people to PPP’s narrative against the forces of darkness, terrorism and extremism that had been digging at the very roots of the country, Bilawal said in a statement.
He also expressed gratitude to the countrymen, particularly the people of Chitral, for reposing confidence in the PPP.
