ISLAMABAD: A new 747-MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) in Guddu is all set to add power to the national grid, prior to its schedule, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is believed to inaugurate the plant the next Monday.
Sources in the Water and Power Ministry disclosed that the premier would inaugurate the plant on April 21, stating that the plant had undergone the testing process and subsequently achieved commercial operation date (COD), almost one year before its scheduled time, to commence power generation operations. According to sources, the Prime Minister’s House has given the approval to launch the plant, which was scheduled to commence power generation in April next year.
“It is the first ever big public and private sector power plant in the country’s history whose efficiency rate is around 54 percent,” a senior official of the ministry said.
He added that one-year advance operation of the said power plant would save the national kitty around Rs52billion.
Sources further said the Central Power Generation Company (CPGC) had played active role for installation and early initiation of the new plant to enhance power production for growing power demand.
The power plant will help the government cope with increasing demand of electricity and will enhance power supply to this area. The plant, which has been installed on the premises of the existing Guddu power plant complex in Kashmore district of Sindh has and will also create employment opportunities.
According to details, the 747-MW Combined Cycle Power Plant consists of two gas turbines of 243-MW, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine of 261-MW and associated equipment. However, there will be no additional gas required for the new plant and the existing supply will be used for power production.
It may be mentioned here that the overall power generation on Sunday noon, through the various power sources, remained at 10,100-MW, as hydel power generation was recorded at 2820-MW, thermal 1130-MW, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) 6,150-MW.
The demand of power at the time was recorded to stand at 12,200-MWand left behind a power shortfall of 2,100-MW. Besides, up to 12 hours power load-shedding was reported in different parts of the country that is compounding misery of the masses who are already bearing the brunt of unscheduled power outages coupled with sky rocketing power tariff.
