Senate’s committee to review Protection of Pakistan Bill-2014

Opposition terms PPB-2014 against basic human rights

ISLAMABAD – The Senate on Friday referred Protection of Pakistan Bill-2014 to its Standing Committee on Law and Justice for further perusal and deliberations.

The bill was moved by Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid. Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Awami National Party protested against the PPB-2014 which grants sweeping powers of arrest and detention to the security forces.

Senator Raza Rabbani labelled the PPB-2014 as a ‘black law’ and said it was against the basic human rights and the constitution of Pakistan. He asked the government to review the bill and table in the Senate after addressing reservations of the opposition parties.

He said that the bill should be drafted according to constitution and law of the land. Minister Zahid Hamid informed the House that modification had been made in the bill and the government would welcome any suggestions from the opposition members.
