Hurling allegations at ISI shameful: Imran
ISLAMABAD: Criticising a private TV channel for launching a media campaign against the country’s premier intelligence agency, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday said that hurling allegations at the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) was shameful. Addressing the 18th foundation day celebrations of PTI at Orchard Scheme Islamabad, the cricketer-turned-politician said that only a strong army could ensure a strong Pakistan. About Hamid Mir, he said the attempt on the journalist’s live was deplorable, but the aftermath of the attack was condemnable, as the state institutions were maligned by a media group. He demanded the Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) to look into ‘foreign funding’ to certain media houses. The PTI chairman said that free, fair and transparent elections were the prime responsibility of the “supreme judiciary”, and added that former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry helped rig the elections, saying he was involved in “match-fixing”. He demanded that the government expose all those who managed the rigging plan, and initiate treason trial against them. He expressed reservations over the meeting of the former CJP with the returning officers (ROs) before holding the May 2013 general election. “Citizens had voted for someone else, while the one who did not receive the majority vote was able to declare victory.” He said that there was no accountability in the country, and added that the PTI would introduce a new impartial and “credible accountability system” to eliminate corruption from Pakistan. Imran announced that the PTI would protest on May 11 against the “rigging plan”. “On May 11, we will begin our protest to struggle for a transparent election process,” he said, adding that a free and fair election commission was absolutely necessary for a healthy democracy.
