Police find no evidence suggesting Mashal committed blasphemy: IG

PESHAWAR: The investigation so far into the Mardan lynching incident have found no evidence that Mashal Khan committed blasphemy, Khyber Pakhtwnkha police chief said on Monday.

While briefing media on the progress made by the police, IGP Salahuddin Khan Mehsud said initial investigation concluded nothing concrete against Mashal and his friends Abdullah and Zubair.

Last week, an angry mob at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan Campus, lynched Mashal to death, on suspicions of posting blasphemous content online. His friends Zubair and Abdullah managed to escape from the scene.

Abdullah has recorded the statement in which he stated that he and Mashal are staunch Muslims and had never said anything blasphemous.

Salahuddin further said at least 59 suspects have been arrested including six university officials. The campus has a discipline problem, he said adding that the administration informed the police late.
