Supreme Court restores tax on mobile phone scratch cards

Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa headed a three member bench of the apex court which heard a case pertaining to taxes on mobile phone scratchcards.

There was a debate during proceedings, if matters pertaining to taxes could be heard under Article 184-3. The top court concluded that it could not issue orders on matters related to taxes.The court also said that it doesn’t want to intervene in matters of public revenue and taxes.

As things stand now with the restoration of taxes on scratch cards from now as much as Rs25 will be deducted on every Rs100 card.

Under former CJP Justice (retd) SaqibNisar, the Supreme Court had taken suomotu notice and ordered suspension in deduction of taxes prepaid on mobile phone scratch cards.
