No-Trust Motion Submitted against Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi
Lahore: Lawmakers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday submitted a no-confidence motion against Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, and termed the move the "last nail in the coffin of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) 40-year long politics.
The Punjab Assembly's Secretariat allowed the PML-N lawmakers to enter its premises and submit their motion, a day after the submission of the no-trust motion by the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against its own Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari.
Special Secretary Chaudhry Amir Habib received the motion from PML-N MPAs Samiullah Khan, Khalil Tahir Sundhu, Pir Ashraf Rasool, Khawaja Salman Rafique, Mirza Javed and Mian Abdur Raoof.
The motion carrying signatures of the lawmakers stated: “Speaker Pervez Elahi has lost confidence of majority members of the House [and] the province’s matters are not being run in accordance with the Constitution of Pakistan”.
It went on to say that “Speaker Elahi ruined the democratic traditions of the province by following his vested interests”.
Talking to media persons, the PML-N lawmakers claimed that Elahi's politics had come to an end, saying his "dream to become Punjab Chief Minister will never be accomplished".
A day earlier, Deputy Speaker Mazari moved the Supreme Court to take notice of the ongoing constitutional crises in the province and expressed concern over the lack of cooperation in the assembly secretariat after he had summoned the house.
The Supreme Court ruled that the National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri’s ruling to dismiss the no-confidence motion and subsequent dissolution of the lower house of parliament by the president on PM Imran's advice were contrary to the law and Constitution.
The court has also ordered to reinstate the National Assembly and summon its session at 10.30am on Saturday (April 9) to hold voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan. -The Express Tribune
