Trump Extends Ceasefire at Pakistan’s Request, Blockade Continues
Washington: President Trump has indefinitely extended the ceasefire with Iran.
In a post online , the President said he agreed to a request by Pakistan "to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal."
Trump said he extended the ceasefire until Iran's "proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other."
It was the latest instance of Trump backing down from his repeated threats to bomb power plants and other civilian infrastructure in Iran.
Trump's announcement appeared to be unilateral, and it was not immediately clear whether Iran, or Israel, would agree to extend the ceasefire.
An adviser to Iran's lead negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Trump's announcement carried little weight.
Pakistan, meanwhile, celebrated the announcement and said it would continue to try to negotiate an end to the war. It was not clear when, or if, that second round of talks would be scheduled.
Trump said he would continue the US Navy's blockade of Iran's ports. Iran's leaders have called the blockade an act of war , and it became a sticking point in proceeding with talks.
The ceasefire extension came a few hours after Trump had said he was not inclined to continue the truce and the US military was "raring to go."
A White House official said Vice President JD Vance's trip to Pakistan will not be happening on Tuesday in light of Trump's Truth Social post.
He was due to lead the US delegation in peace talks.
"In light of President Trump’s TRUTH Social post confirming the United States is awaiting a unified proposal from the Iranians, the trip to Pakistan will not be happening today. Any further updates on in-person meetings will be announced by the White House," the official said. – Reuters
