Zardari emphasises ties with Uzbekistan


ISLAMABAD: Pakistan offers a convenient and suitable medium for Uzbekistan, for the promotion and boosting of its economy by taking full advantage of the Gwader Port facility, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday. According to a press release, the president made these remarks in his meeting with Uzbek Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov at Aiwan-e-Sadr. “We must take full advantage of our geographical proximity, shared cultural heritage to enhance cooperation in trade, commerce and culture,” President Zardari added. Uzbek Ambassador Oybek Arif Usmanov and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Malik Ammad Ahmed Khan were also present during the meeting, besides other senior officials. The President said during the meeting that Pakistan attaches great importance to cementing friendly bilateral relations with Uzbekistan. The government believes in opening a new chapter of relations based on mutual interest and cooperation with Central Asian States, especially Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan, being a contiguous neighbour of Afghanistan has an important role to play in promoting peace and security in the region, the president said. The president also stressed the need for both countries to undertake joint measures including promotion of business linkages and interaction among their corporate sectors to realize the full potential of bilateral trade and economic relations. staff report
