Appointment of female judges challenged in FSC

LAHORE: A citizen, Mian Hamid Murtaza, filed a petition with the Federal Shariat Court challenging the appointment of females as judges or qazis. As interim relief, he said that the female judges working at various courts of Pakistan may be ordered to restrain from further proceeding, because their “functions are purely un-Islamic and contrary to the injunctions of the Quran and Sunnah,” until a final decision on his petition. The petitioner’s counsel, Malik Muhammad Rabnawaz Khan, claimed that according to Islamic injunctions a woman could not be appointed a judge. He said that the court should give its verdict so the existing law relating to these appointments should be brought in conformity with Islamic injunctions. staff report
