Govt has failed to overcome energy crisis, says Nawaz
* PML-N chief says Musharraf pushed country into darkness
* Economy can’t be revived without promoting trade, industry
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Sunday blamed former president Pervez Musharraf for “pushing the country into darkness” by failing to overcome the energy crisis and criticised him for the destruction of state organs during his rule.
He was talking to a delegation of Karachi-based businessmen from the Korangi Association of Trade and Commerce, led by SM Munir.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Hamza Shahbaz Sharif and Senator Pervaiz Rashed were also present on the occasion.
Failure: Nawaz said the current government had also failed to launch any significant projects to effectively cope with the ongoing power crisis during its two years in office.
He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was fully aware of the plight of the people – including the businessmen of the country – and the fact that the ongoing power shortage was adversely affecting all sections of society.
Nawaz said the government would not have faced the current crises and the consequent countrywide protests by the people against inflation and load shedding, if the Pakistan People’s Party-led government had gotten its priorities right from the beginning. The PML-N chief said his party is aware of the problems being faced by the traders’ community, adding that the country’s business sector could not progress until the resolution of all these problems.
Revival: He said the economy of the country could not be revived without promoting industries, trade and business through an effective strategy. Nawaz said the economic crisis was a result of the lack of practical measures and facilities necessary for improving the local industries.
He said Pakistan had enjoyed a respectable place in the international market by providing quality products on reasonable rates during the PML-N’s last term in office. However, the same was not true anymore, Nawaz said.
He said the PML-N, during its term in office, promoted privatisation and independent trade, encouraged investment and implemented the motorways and Makran Coastal Highway projects, which resulted in the improvement of the economy and produced a conducive environment for industrialists, traders and investors. staff report
