Senate debates 18th Amendment, Hazara situation
ISLAMABAD: The Senate members debated the 18th Amendment Bill besides the chaotic situation of the Hazara Division today.
Yesterday, the bill was introduced in the Senate. Adviser to prime minister and chairman parliamentary committee on constitutional reforms Mian Raza Rabbani moved the 18th Amendment bill in the Senate after Leader of the House Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari moved the motion to suspend the business of the House.
The PML-Q, which did not oppose the bill in the National Assembly, took a U-turn when Wasim Sajjad opposed the bill in the upper house of parliament.
Senator Raza Rabbani said the Bill was the outcome of the efforts of Benazir Bhutto, while Wasim Sajjad claimed that PNL-Q had asked the committee to not to change the name of NWFP unilaterally but their written disapproval was ignored.
Federal Minister Azam Swati called for removing concerns of people of Hazara.
Participating in the debate PML-N senator Ishaq Dar said if the new name was not acceptable PML-Q should not have signed the bill and it was not the end PML-N might consider a new consensus name. 'This should not be made a political issue'.
Babar Ghouri of MQM said our demand of complete provincial autonomy was not met and suggested for 19th Amendment to settle unresolved issues. He also recommended for allocating two National Assembly seats for Pakistanis held in Bangladesh.
