LAHORE: Following the release of a report compiled by the UN commission that investigated the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Interior Ministry has placed several names, including those of former intelligence officials, on the exit control list (ECL), reported a private TV channel on Sunday.

As many as six police officials who were also serving during the tenure of former president Pervez Musharraf have been put on the “duty suspension list”.

Rawalpindi RPO Aslam Tarin told the channel that former Rawalpindi DPO Saud Aziz had been made officer on special duty along with SSP (Operations) Yaseen Farook, former Rawalpindi DCO Irfan Ilahi, SP Khurram Shahzad, SP Ashfaque Anwar and AIG (Investigations) Chaudhry Abdul Majeed.

The federal government has also asked the establishment to take stern action against the officials. PPP spokeswoman Fauzia Wahab said those who were careless in their responsibilities would be punished.

Citing Interior Affairs Ministry sources, the channel said the names of former ISI director general Hameed Gul, former Intelligence Bureau director general Ejaz Shah and former interior secretary Kamal Shah had also been put on the ECL.

The channel said two serving army officials named in the UN report were “still safe”.

The contract of Civil Defence Director General Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema, who was a spokesman for the Interior Ministry at the time of Benazir’s assassination, has been annulled.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said steps would be taken to bring back Musharraf if he was found responsible for the assassination.
