I am not ‘powerless’: Zardari
ISLAMABAD: After signing the 18th Amendment Bill on Monday, President Asif Ali Zardari said he is not totally powerless, as “I believe my powers rest in the people and democracy”. Having seen off Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif and others, the president told the media, “Let there be no doubt that I am a true democrat and the people are with me.” “I never thought of dissolving the assemblies over the past two years,” he said, referring to the powers he had under Article 58(2b), which now stands repealed. Zardari said while the doors stood closed to dictators, “mishaps” could not be ruled out. Asked about the possibility of another dictatorship, he said, “I am fully confident that no dictator would dare step in now, but then, who can rule out mishaps.” staff report
