Gilani sets up body to probe washing of BB murder scene* Committee to submit report to PM within seven working days
* Decision taken in light of UN report on BB’s assassinationStaff Report
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Saturday constituted a three member fact-finding committee to probe the hosing down of the crime scene soon after the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto on December 27, 2007.
The committee, headed by Cabinet Secretary Abdulrauf Chaudhry, will determine whether the then Military Intelligence (MI) director general had given an order to police officials to wash the crime scene of the Benazir murder.
Submit: The committee will submit its report to the PM within seven working days. Its other members are Vice Chief of General Staff Maj Gen Sajjad Ghani, and Peshawar Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Fayyaz Tooru. According to sources, the PM also took the Army high command into confidence regarding the constitution of the committee.
Un report: The decision to hold an inquiry regarding the washing of the crime scene has been taken in light of the UN report on Benazir’s assassination. The UN commission’s report claims that the then Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO), Saud Aziz, had ordered that the crime scene at Liaquat Bagh be hosed down on the orders of then MI Director General Maj Gen Nadeem Ijaz, a close relative of former president Musharraf.
The commission has attached great significance to the washing of the crime scene to eliminate evidence that could have proved useful in investigations into the assassination.
