No raise in electricity tariff soon: Hafeez Sheikh

WASHINGTON: Finance Advisor Abdul Hafeez Sheikh has said government has settled all issues with IMF, turning down 6 percent increase in electricity tariff at the moment, Geo news reported.

He said next meeting of IMF board is scheduled on May 14 to seek fifth trench of loan worth of 11.30 billion dollars.

Speaking at a news conference after holding nerve-shaking round of talks with IMF officials and meetings with US officials in Washington, Adbul Hafeez said in order to seek trenches of loans from IMF, two sides agreed upon raise in power tariff on different stages.

However temporarily, no immediate hike in electricity tariff has been decided, he maintained.

A six-point agenda has been formulated to curb electricity shortfall, which includes better usage of available resources, making efforts to gain more fuel, announcement of National Electricity Conservation Policy (NECP), improvement in performance of electricity distribution companies and improvement in load management.
