Establishment, PPP on the same page: Gilani
* PM says country’s leadership united over all issues
* Efforts being made through back door diplomatic channels to resolve issues with India
ON BOARD PM’S AIRCRAFT: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government has the support of the establishment, which is clear from the government’s progress in the war on terror and at international level, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Monday.
“For the first time, we are on the same page and headed in one direction,” he said while addressing journalists on board his aircraft before reaching Kathmandu en route to Bhutan to attend the 16th SAARC summit. He said the current PPP government was pro-establishment.
Gilani said the leadership of the country was united over all issues and determined to resolve them jointly to provide relief to the masses. He said the current government had the full support of all political parties, and was committed to resolving the problems confronting the country.
He said high-level committee had been set up to look into the hosing down of the site of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. He described the committee as a “powerful” unit to unearth the causes behind the removal of evidence from the crime scene.
Replying to a question about talks with India, the prime minister said efforts were being made through normal diplomatic and backdoor channels to resolve all outstanding issues.
Replying to another question about Pakistan’s demand for civil nuclear technology, Gilani said he raised the matter during his recent visit to US to attend a nuclear summit.
About the 18th Amendment, he said a committee was being constituted to implement the amendment “in letter and spirit”. He said all the provinces and stakeholders were being taken on board, and he was consulting political leaders. He said he had already discussed the matter with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif. He said quarters trying to engineer public opinion against the government had failed following the success of the 18th Amendment. app
