‘Out of the box’ decisions to cope with energy crisis

* 200MW generated from wind energy to be added to national grid by the end of the year

ISLAMABAD: The energy crisis has forced us to vigorously search for out of the box, imaginative and bold solutions, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Thursday.

During a briefing given to him on alternate energy sources at the Presidency, Zardari asked for an early adoption and utilisation of modern solar and geothermal technologies including solar cookers, geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters and solar water pumping to take complete advantage of the available natural energy resources and to meet the energy requirements of the country.

The meeting was briefed about various available options, including solar and geothermal technologies, which could be exploited and utilised for meeting the current energy needs of the country. The participants were informed that work on a pilot project of solar electrification of the Planning Commission and the Pakistan Engineering Council’s buildings under Japanese Grant-in-Aid programme had been finalised and Japanese organisations were now involved in the tendering and procurement activity. The president said the Presidency should also be converted to solar power on the pattern of the Planning Commission. The meeting was informed that pursuant to an earlier meeting held in February where the president had advised for initiation of pilot projects for introducing solar cookers, the results obtained from a number of selected towns had been encouraging.

Grid: The meeting was informed that another 200MW of power generated through wind energy would be added to the national grid by the end of this year.

Gas: The president said gas and electricity geysers should be phased out of government buildings to save gas in winters. app
