Federal govt mulls key post for Justice Javed Iqbal
By Hasnaat Malik
ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering appointing Justice (r) Javed Iqbal to a key post for his meritorious services.
A high official told Daily Times that the government wanted to make the most of Justice Javed’s experience and his good reputation. Hence it would appoint him to a key post in this regard, he added.
Regarding the question about his appointment as an ad hoc judge, the official said that the government does not have any objections to that.
Sources said that Justice Iqbal had also played a key role in defusing the tension between the judiciary and executive. They said that the government might appoint him as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman in the future.
The sources added that Justice Iqbal has ruled out clashes between the institutions several times in the last week.
On the request of the federal government, the Supreme Court (SC), on June 20, appointed him as the head of the Abbottabad commission, which has started its investigations into the May 2 operation.
Justice Iqbal, who retired as an SC judge on July 31, persistently endeavoured for the recovery of the missing persons and due to his personal efforts many of them were traced out.
He along with twelve other judges of the SC had refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) of November 3, 2007. Like Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges of the SC he was also put under house arrest along with his family and later reinstated in March 2009.
