Only targeted action to be taken in Karachi: Malik

KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that no operation would be conducted in Karachi, but Rangers would take only targeted action on intelligence information.

“Peace in Karachi is a must not only for innocent citizens but also for national economy,” Malik told newsmen Wednesday after presiding over a meeting on law and order at National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) here.

“Action will focus on those involved in targeted killings and terrorists. This fight will continue till normalcy is restored in the cosmopolitan city,” he stated.

According to him between Tuesday and Wednesday night, operation in particularly disturbed areas of Karachi resulted in recovery of sophisticated weapons and several dozen arrests. Replying to a question, the minister said he agreed on the reservations of MQM chief Altaf Hussain and action is being taken against outlaws and terrorists in Karachi.” The meeting was attended by Sindh Additional Chief Secretary Home Waseem Ahmed, Acting DG Rangers Sindh Brigadier Zafar Ahmad, DG FIA Tehseen Shah, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman Dr Mohamamd Yasin, IG Police Sindh Wajid Durrani, Additional IG Police Saud Mirza, Additional IG Police Special, Branch Rasool Bux Sandh, Director FIA Moazzam Jah Ansari and DO Fronteir Corps Iqbal Dara.

Directs PTA to help Karachi police: Rehman Malik Wednesday directed PTA to help Karachi police in detecting terrorists and overcome mobile phones illegal use.

Presiding National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) meeting here, he said misuse of mobile phones and SIMS by terrorists had to be urgently stopped.

It discussed misuse of mobile phones and SIMS by terrorists in Karachi with special reference to stolen mobile phones and multiple mobile phones with same IMEI numbers.

Dr Yasin said PTA already blocked 3.64 million SIMS that failed to approach 668 after repeated reminders. Under directive of interior minister, a new system phase-3 of SIM, ‘SIM Information – 668’ ie ‘Proper ID Verification’ has been introduced to block misuse of unauthorised SIMS.

He said process to block remaining illegal SIMS was underway. So far PTA had blocked 20.735 million SIMS due to non-compliance of government directives.

Dr Yasin said a system 789 was also being strengthened for automating pre-cell documentation of new mobile connection. ppi
