Toll in Lyari building collapse rises to 10

KARACHI: The death toll from Thursday's five storey building collapse in the Lyari area has risen to ten, while many people are still trapped underneath the debris and rescue operations are underway for their recovery, Geo News reported.

The building at Mossa Lane in Lyari collapsed at 11:00 AM on Thursday and the injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital. The Army Engineering Corp. was called in to retrieve those who were still trapped underneath the debris.

On Friday, volunteers were facing difficulties due to narrow lane and streets. Those evacuated from the building were taken to camp set up at Shah Latif Bhitai Hall while some took refuge at the residences of their neighbours or relatives and the local mosque.

Uninterrupted power supply was being provided to ensure that rescue efforts continued without any stoppage while Sehri and Iftar had been arranged by philanthropists for volunteers and those affected.

According to Deputy Commissioner South, Jamal Mustafa Kazi relief work was not progressing slowly but with caution and care so that no harm was caused to those trapped underneath the debris.
