Karachi will return to normalcy soon: PM

* Gilani says PPP has strengthened institutions

* Committee formed on creation of new provinces

BAHAWALPUR: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, on Thursday, said that all the political parties were being taken on board on the Karachi issue and the city would return to normalcy soon.

Addressing the party workers, Gilani said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had strengthened parliament, judiciary, the media, the civil society and other institutions.

He said that the PPP had made great efforts for progress of the country and that had made it a symbol of the federation. He said that the PPP and the Sindh Cabinet had given authority to President Asif Ali Zardari to negotiate with political parties for maintaining law and order in Karachi.

Replying to a question, he said, “Energy conferences were being called to overcome load shedding and we have taken several steps to address the issue.”

He said that the PPP had always faced criticism with patience, adding that high moral values of life had been set by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for the party workers to follow.

Gilani said that a committee had been formed to consider proposals about the formation of new provinces in the country.

He said the government had taken many steps to create job opportunities and enhance electricity generation in the country.

He said that the cabinet had decided to take steps for reorganisation and restructuring of railway.

Separately, the prime minister inaugurated the Pakistan Software Export Board’s (PSEB) web portal and distributed merit certificates and medals among graduates of the PSEB’s internship programme for Bahawalpur and Multan division.

Speaking on the occasion, Gilani said, “Skilled and trained human resource is absolutely essential for industrial growth and PSEB has been playing an active role in capacity-building of Pakistan’s IT industry. I am pleased that the IT graduates of rapidly-developing cities such as Bahawalpur and Multan have an opportunity to benefit from such capacity-building initiatives of the Ministry of Information Technology”.

The prime minister also lauded the efforts of the Pakistan Software Export Board for developing its web portal for the IT industry that would be helpful in facilitating the local IT companies and highlighting Pakistan’s positive image round the globe. Yet addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Universal Service Funds (USF) project, the prime minister said that USF’s project in Bahawalpur manifested the determination of the government to provide basic telecom facilities to remote areas of Pakistan.

This project was implemented at a cost of Rs 310 million, out of which USF contributed Rs 248 million. The project will benefit approximately 250,000 people located in the remote areas of Bahawalpur division. agencies
